OUR ENERGY SUPPLY MIX

As a local distribution utility, Belmont Light purchases electricity from wholesale generating plants all over New England and delivers it to Belmont homes and businesses. We carefully manage a diverse power supply portfolio according to prices and other economic factors, reliability considerations, and the needs of our customers.

Pursuing an Increasingly Renewable, Non-emitting Supply

Guided by our Power Supply Policy, Belmont Light procures more and more renewable and/or non-emitting energy each year while keeping our rates stable and our service safe and reliable. In 2025, we were 27% renewable, voluntarily meeting the Massachusetts Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and 43% non-emitting, well-positioned for meeting the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standard (GGES) in 2030. Our renewable goals align with those set forth for the electricity sector as stated in the Town’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) and the Belmont Roadmap for Strategic Decarbonization.

Power Supply Costs

Belmont Light’s power supply costs are heavily influenced by the system’s peak power usage during 14 hours per year. Our non-coincident Peak (NCP) hour determines our distribution costs by influencing how we construct our local distribution grid. Our coincident peak hour with the Independent System Operator of New England (ISO-NE) determines our capacity costs. Our twelve monthly coincident peak hours with our transmission provider Eversource determine our transmission costs. The documents below specify these peak hours over the last few years.
