Belmont Light Rate Hearing – January 13, 2026
Category: Uncategorized | Posted On: January 8, 2026
Background
Belmont Light is hosting a rate hearing on January 13, 2026 to review proposed updates to electricity rates. This hearing gives customers an opportunity to learn about the changes, ask questions, and provide feedback before any updates take effect.
In 2026, Belmont Light anticipates a budget shortfall driven by rising transmission costs and planned investments in the local electric system. To address this, the Light Board is considering:
- An overall rate increase of about 5% to reflect higher costs for moving electricity (transmission)
- Adjustments to the conservation charge, which funds energy efficiency programs and customer rebates
These changes are designed to keep Belmont Light financially healthy while continuing to provide reliable, safe, and sustainable electricity to all customers.
Why Rates Are Changing
Electricity costs are rising due to:
- Electrification, which increases demand on the grid
- Higher transmission costs as more power moves from generation to homes and businesses
- Ongoing investments in infrastructure, maintenance, and customer programs
The proposed changes aim to recover these costs fairly while continuing to support programs that benefit customers and the community.
