GREEN CHOICE PROGRAM

Belmont Light is committed to reaching a 100% renewable portfolio by the year 2022. Want to help us go a step further? Every Belmont Light customer has the option of supporting renewable energy resources through our voluntary Green Choice Program. By electing to participate in Green Choice, you can help add additional renewable energy resources to our portfolio for as little as $3 per month added to your electric bill. 

How Does the Program Work?

Funds from the Green Choice Program will be used to purchase and retire Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from New England-based, Class I-qualified wind generators. RECs acquired through the program will not be used to achieve Belmont Light’s minimum renewable target for the year, but will instead be used to surpass annual renewable goals. 

For each megawatt-hour of electricity produced by a qualified renewable resource, 1 REC is created on the New England Power Pool Generation Information System (NEPOOL GIS). RECs market helps ensure that renewable resources remain competitive in New England by capturing their environmental value or “attributes” as a second product. As a Green Choice participant, you choose to contribute to a more sustainable power supply for Belmont and for the greater New England grid.

What Is the Impact of My Monthly Contribution in Kilowatt-Hours?

As the pricing of Renewable Energy Credits is market-based, the impact of your contribution on Belmont Light’s power supply portfolio will depend on market conditions at the end of each Green Choice Program year.  The chart below will help approximate the impact of your chosen monthly contribution based on recent market pricing. Belmont Light will update this chart periodically as market prices fluctuate.
