GREEN CHOICE PROGRAM

Every Belmont Light customer has the option of supporting renewable energy through our voluntary Green Choice Program. By participating in Green Choice, you increase demand for renewables in New England for as little as $3 per month added to your electric bill.

How Does the Program Work?

Funds from the Green Choice Program are used to purchase and retire Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from New England-based, Class I-qualified generators. 

For each megawatt-hour of electricity produced by a qualified renewable resource, 1 REC is created on the New England Power Pool Generation Information System (NEPOOL GIS). Purchasing these Class I RECs helps ensure that renewable resources remain competitive in New England by placing a value on their “environmental attributes.” As a Green Choice participant, you demand a more sustainable power supply for the New England grid. 

What Is the Impact of My Monthly Contribution in Kilowatt-Hours?

As the pricing of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) is market-based, the number of RECs you enable Belmont Light to purchase depends on market conditions when Belmont Light purchases those RECs. The chart below approximates the number of kilowatt hours you “offset” with your chosen monthly contribution based on recent market pricing. Belmont Light will update this chart periodically as market prices fluctuate.
